  • OPEN VP only ASLPI -- videophone evaluation in ASL-DES office (between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT/EST)
I do not live near Gallaudet and will need to take the ASLPI from my area via videophone
Available formats include:

Step 3: Informed Consent Video Record Release*

The American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) is an evaluation adapted from the Language Proficiency Interview (LPI) developed by the Foreign Service Institute (FSI). The precept in this type of evaluation is to find out, through an interactive interview conducted by a qualified ASLPI interviewer, what an individual can do with ASL at a given point in time. The ASLPI is taken for many purposes (e.g., to meet admission and academic requirements; for employment purposes; to include results in a portfolio). The ASLPI is video recorded and a team of qualified evaluators rate the interview and assign a holistic proficiency level (0-5). Video recorded interviews are not copied and provided to examinees or any other individual. All video recorded interviews are maintained in a confidential, secure location.

As with all measurement instruments and evaluation tools, quality control is critical. All aspects of the ASLPI evaluation system are closely and continually monitored, checked and reviewed for validity and reliability. Training and ongoing refresher retraining is cyclically provided to all evaluators and is critical to maintaining a sound system and ensuring inter- and intra-rater reliability. The internal quality assurance checks and ongoing evaluator training require the use of video recorded evaluations. Confidentiality is mandated of all evaluators and system personnel, and any breach of this confidentiality can lead to immediate dismissal.

I understand that the video recording of my interview and all data related to my evaluation are kept secure and confidential, and become the exclusive property of ASL Diagnostic and Evaluation Services, Gallaudet University. The video recording will not be released to me under any circumstance as the process, procedures and protocol are copyrighted and legally registered information, and any release of materials would compromise the validity of the evaluation. I understand that interviews are checked for internal quality control, confidential inter- and intra-rating reliability studies, and for ongoing training of evaluators to maintain the psychometric integrity of the system.

ASL Diagnostic and Evaluation Services (ASL-DES) would like to use my interview for other purposes noted below. Regardless of whether I grant permission for ASL-DES to use my interview for external/public purposes, my relationship with Gallaudet University, or my home institution, will not change, nor will there be any effect on my ASLPI result.
I GRANT permission for my video recorded American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) to be used for the following external/public purposes:
(Please type an X or initial the options below for which you grant permission)
  • Review of evaluation system by language proficiency experts in the field
  • Periodic comparative studies of the system with other tests/tools that measure ASL proficiency
  • Presentations about signed language proficiency evaluation and other related topics and areas of interest
  • ASL Diagnostic and Evaluation Services (ASL-DES) website as a visual sample of the proficiency levels for public viewing (a portion of my interview will be uploaded to the ASL-DES website and my proficiency level [e.g., 1, 2+, 3] will be publicly identified on the website).
I DO NOT GRANT permission for my video recorded American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) to be used for any external/public purposes.
